Maybe pain woke you at 2 AM again. Maybe someone handed you this book and it sat on your nightstand for weeks. Maybe you are not sure you still believe God heals, but a small, stubborn part of you is not ready to let go.
The Altar is a forty-day devotional built around one simple idea: for a few minutes each day, this book is a place where you meet God exactly as you are. Each day begins by naming where you really are, including the exhaustion, doubt, anger and fear, then rests on a full passage of scripture, an invitation to speak a declaration aloud, a prayer, and a moment of rest.
Across forty days you will walk through themes such as the honest prayer, Jehovah Rapha, the woman who touched His garment, speaking to mountains, the midnight hour, Lazarus, the pool of Bethesda, dry bones, and a living testimony. It is a companion for the waiting, not a formula.
You picked up this book for a reason.
Maybe someone gave it to you and you set it on the nightstand for weeks before opening it. Maybe you bought it yourself at 2 AM because the pain woke you up again and you were searching for something — anything — that might help. Maybe you are not even sure you believe God heals anymore, but some small, stubborn part of you is not ready to let go of the possibility.
However you got here — I am glad you are here.
This is not a theology book. I am not going to explain to you how healing works or walk you through Greek word studies or give you a seven-step formula to unlock your miracle. There are good books that do those things. This is not one of them.
This book is an altar.
In the Old Testament, an altar was a place where a person met God. Not a building. Not a program. A place. Sometimes it was just a pile of stones in the middle of nowhere — but it was the spot where heaven touched earth, where a human being said, "God, I am here," and God said, "I know. I have been waiting for you."
For the next forty days, this book is that place for you.
Here is what each day looks like:
You show up. That is the first thing. You open the book. You do not have to feel spiritual. You do not have to have slept well. You do not have to have any faith at all — just enough to turn the page. God can work with that.
You are seen. Each day begins by acknowledging where you actually are. Not where you should be. Not where the Sunday morning version of you would be. Where you ACTUALLY are — the exhaustion, the doubt, the anger, the grief, the fear that whispers in the dark. We name it. We do not pretend it away. God is not afraid of your honesty. He prefers it.
You hear His word. Every day centers on scripture — the full passage, not a fragment. These are the words God spoke into situations as desperate as yours, spoken to people as tired and afraid as you might be right now. We sit inside these verses together. We do not rush past them. We ask what they mean for someone lying in a hospital bed, for someone who just got bad news, for someone whose faith is barely a flicker.
You declare. There is a moment each day when you are invited to open your mouth and speak. Not because your words are magic. Because scripture says there is power in the tongue, and the act of speaking truth out loud does something inside you that reading silently cannot do. The declarations are written for you — word for word. Speak them. Whisper them. Read them through tears. However they come out is enough.
You rest. Every day ends with rest. Not homework. Not a checklist. Not "now go pray for three more hours." Rest. Because healing does not come from striving. It comes from surrender. And surrender means, at some point, you stop talking and you let God hold you.
A few things before we begin.
This book will not guilt you. If you miss a day, pick it up the next day. If you miss a week, come back. God did not set a timer. He is patient with you in ways you have never been patient with yourself.
This book will not blame you. If healing has not come yet, it is not because your faith is too small or your sin is too big or you said the wrong prayer. I do not know why some healings take longer than others. I do not pretend to. But I know this: God's character does not change based on your circumstances. He is the Healer. That is His name. And names do not expire.
This book is honest about pain. You will find no "just believe" or "everything happens for a reason" in these pages. What you will find is scripture that meets you in the mess — because that is where God does His best work.
This book is for your body, your mind, and your spirit. Healing is not just physical. Some of you need a diagnosis to change. Some of you need anxiety to lift. Some of you need grief to loosen its grip. Some of you need all three. God heals all of it. We are going to cover all of it.
Here is the journey ahead:
Days 1 through 5 — We begin by being honest. Honest with God, honest with ourselves. We acknowledge the pain. We give ourselves permission to hurt. We invite God into the places we have been protecting.
Days 6 through 10 — We turn our eyes to who God is. Not what we want Him to do — who He IS. Jehovah Rapha. The God who heals. We build the foundation of everything that follows on His character, not our feelings.
Days 11 through 15 — We build faith. Not the loud, showy kind. The kind that shows up when it is hard. The kind that reaches for the hem of His garment when everything in you says it is not going to work. The kind that moves mountains — even when the mountain has not moved yet.
Days 16 through 20 — We begin to declare over our bodies. We learn that our words carry weight. We speak life. We agree with what God has said about us instead of what the circumstances are saying.
Days 21 through 30 — We go deeper into the wilderness seasons. Waiting. Trusting when nothing is changing. Finding God in the silence.
Days 31 through 40 — We rise. We worship through it. We receive. We carry what we have learned into every day that follows.
Before you turn to Day 1, I want to pray for you.
Father, I pray for the person holding this book right now. You know their name. You know what woke them up last night. You know the diagnosis they have not told anyone about. You know the prayer they have prayed a thousand times. You know the part of them that is afraid You are not going to come through.
Meet them here. Over these forty days, do what only You can do. Not what I can do with words on a page — what YOU can do with Your living word planted in a willing heart. Heal what is broken. Restore what was stolen. Rebuild what collapsed. And where faith is barely a flicker, protect that flame. Fan it. It is enough. It has always been enough.
You are Jehovah Rapha. You are the Lord who heals. That is not a title You chose — it is who You ARE. And You do not change.
I trust You with every person who reads these pages. Every single one.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
Turn the page. He is already there.
Maybe you almost did not open this book today.
Maybe it has been sitting on your nightstand or buried in your phone for a while now, and something in you kept putting it off — not because you do not believe, but because you are tired. Tired of trying. Tired of praying the same prayer and hearing the same silence. Tired of people telling you to have faith when your body is screaming something different.
