She hosted the meetings, kept the book, and was trusted by everyone. Then one Friday afternoon the stokvel's savings were gone. Stokvel fraud is painful because it hurts friendships as well as finances, and it is far more preventable than most members realize.
Don't Trust the Treasurer is a governance manual for protecting your stokvel. The answer is not finding perfect people. It is building better systems. You will start with how stokvel fraud actually works, then learn what a good constitution contains and which financial controls protect everyone, including the treasurer. The book covers what to do when members stop paying, how to handle the difficult question of members who want to leave, and what to do if something goes wrong.
It finishes with a fraud-proof stokvel checklist your group can work through together. If you belong to a stokvel, run one, or are starting one, this gives you a clear way to protect the group's money and trust.
